Yes, that would qualify for a residential energy credit. Exterior doors, exterior windows and skylights all qualify as "qualified energy efficiency improvements." https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/3878786-we-replaced-original-sliding-glass-doors-with-double-pane-...  You can claim a tax credit for 10% of the cost of qualified energy efficiency improvements, but the maximum credit is $200 total for all years from 2006 to this year for windows and doors.

To see where to enter this:

  • Go to the top of your screen and choose My Account.
  • Choose Tools.
  • Choose Topic Search, then type in your topic (Home Energy Improvement) and click Go. Answer the questions in the screens that follow.

Yes, you can get a tax credit for installing energy-efficient property if you have a tax liability.  If you made energy-efficient improvements to your homes like energy-saving roofs, windows, skylights, and doors, you'll be able to claim the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit for 10% of amounts paid for qualified energy efficiency improvements, up to a lifetime cap of $500.

Related Information:

It is a non-refundable credit.   There are times when you can't take the credit in the current year:

  • Your income is at a level that's not taxed at all.
  • You're getting other tax credits that have reduced your tax owed to zero.

If your credit can be carried forward to next year, we'll do that for you.
