My daughter and her boyfriend purchased a home in 2018, he already claimed the amount on the 1098 on his taxes, how do I answer the "Did you own a home in 2018?"

They purchased the home together so she does own a home, but does not have a 1098 to claim.  I think they should have slip the amount on the 1098 on both taxes, but he already filed his return, so not sure how to answer with her not having a 1098 to claim.

If he claimed the mortgage interest then select No for her so it does try to generate questions regarding the mortgage interest

Would either of them even have enough deductions to Itemize?  It might not matter.
This year the Standard Deduction will be doubling so many people will be switching to the Standard Deduction.  And there is a max 10,000 limit (5,000 MFS) of property tax and state taxes "SALT".  And you can only deduct Medical that’s over 7.5% of your AGI.  Also the deduction for job expenses have been suspended.

Just be aware that, since they are not married, only the person who actually paid the mortgage interest and property taxes can deduct them.

@VolvoGirl I had read that, it was more about answering the actual questions since she did purchase a house, just couldn't claim it for the tax break.  Thank you for your help!

@SweetieJean They have both paid for everything house related together.  They split the mortgage payments and the household bills.   I'm moving forward with answering NO since she didn't claim the  1098.  Thank you!
