The tax code for tax year 2021 for a child under the age of 6 the credit is $3,600. Children ages 6 thru 17 the credit is $3,000.
If you have 4 children between the ages of 6 thru 17 in 2021 then your Total Child Tax Credit is $12,000. If you received $6,000 of advanced child tax credits in 2021 then that amount is subtracted from the Total CTC resulting in a Child Tax Credit on the 2021 tax return of $6,000. This amount is entered on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 28. The credit is added to your other tax payments and will be included as part of your federal tax refund or it will reduce the amount of taxes owed.
The Child Tax Credit is NOT a separate tax refund.
How old are your kids? The $3,600 is only for kids under 6 years old. If your kids are 6-17, the credit is $3,000 per child. If you are seeing $6,000, it sounds like your kids are older than 6 so your total credit would be $12,000. If you received the Advanced Payments of half, you would have already received $6,000 so your remaining credit available would be $6,000.
To see if you are getting the correct amount for your Child Tax Credit look at line 28 of your 1040.
