Can and how do I include Illinois sales tax deduction in my itemize deductions for my Federal Tax?

TurboTax will ask the questions to determine if entering the sales tax paid to will improve your refund. It will depend if you itemize your deductions and if you pay state income taxes.  You can select to use either state income tax or sales tax and which is most beneficial depends on the state where you live. You will enter the information in the federal portion of the return and if you have a state return, it will pull the information from the federal. (Note, it is sales tax paid, not collected.)

To enter your sales tax:

·         Please click on Federal, on the left menu

·         Click on Deductions and Credits, along the top

·         You may see a prompt for your sales tax, but if not,

·         Click All Tax Breaks and See All

·         Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, by the green calculator icon, and select See More

·         Click on Start next to Sales Tax
