TurboTax is suggesting that I use the standard deduction but in the standard/itemized comparison is ignoring all of my home mortgage interest--Why would this be?
If you have entered all of your mortgage interest into TurboTax and it is not using it to compare your standard deduction to your itemized deductions try going out of the program and clear your cache and cookies. Please click here for instructions on how to clear your cache. Please click here for instructions on clearing your cookies.
Also, make sure to run all updates to your TurboTax Program. Click here for information on manually updating TurboTax.
You may also try using another browser.
If this does not help, try previewing your tax return forms to make sure your mortgage interest has been entered correctly. Check your Form 1098 and your Schedule A to make sure they look complete. Also go back through your mortgage interest screens to make sure you answered everything correctly especially if you had multiple 1098's or a HELOC. You can get to your mortgage interest screens by typing "1098" in the search box at the top right of your TurboTax screen and click on the link "Jump to 1098".
You can get to your tax return in TurboTax desktop as follows:
- Switch to Forms Mode, and then
- Scroll through your forms in the left panel and
- Click on the form you want to preview (Example Form 1040)
You can get to your Tax Return in TurboTax Online as follows:
- Go to "Tax Tools" in your left panel,
- Select "Tools" and then
- Select "View Tax Summary" and
- Select "Preview Form 1040"
If this does not help, you can always compare them yourself.
The standard deduction amounts for 2024 are:
- $29,200 – Married Filing Jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse (increase of $1,500)
- $21,900 – Head of Household (increase of $1,100)
- $14,600 – Single or Married Filing Separately (increase of $750)
