Turbotax includes elderly credit with my standard deduction but i don't wualify. How do i fix?

1040 sked R makes it clear my AGI is too high, but TT deluxe placed 26,600 in 1040 for standard deduction (married filing jointly, both 68 years old). I cannot file until it's fixed. How?

I think you are mixing up the Credit for the Elderly or Disabled and the additional standard deduction for people 65 or older. They are two separate things. Everyone who is 65 or older gets $1,300 (per person) added to their standard deduction, regardless of income. The only requirement is your age. The additional standard deduction has nothing to do with the Credit for the Elderly or Disabled on Schedule R. That credit has an income restriction and your income is too high to qualify for it. The Credit for the Elderly or Disabled is not added to your standard deduction. If TurboTax were giving you the credit it would appear on Schedule 3 line 54 with the notation "Sch R" next to it.

There is nothing you have to fix. Your tax return is correct as-is.

Your standard deduction of $24,000 plus $1,300 each for over 65 is correct.   You do qualify.   What is TurboTax saying the error is?  The phaseout was for 2017 returns.

We apparently qualify for the Elderly or Disabled Tax Credit. We do not want it and because the Federal government has apparently not released the Form, I cannot proceed in filing my taxes. How can I eliminate the Elderly and Disabled Tax Credit?

Did not attach to IRS 1040-SR.  Would like to complete Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.  Kathleen L. Orosco, M.A.,ED

There are specific qualifications for the Credit for the Elderly or Disabled. To see if you qualify, follow these steps in TurboTax:

  • From the Federal menu, click on Deductions & Credits
  • Expand the menu for Other Deductions and Credits
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Elderly or Disabled Credit
  • Answer the questions on the screens that follow

Information about the qualifications and calculation of the credit may be found in the link below.
