Turbo Tax is requesting mortgage interest but I do not have a mortgage. How do I get around it?

I'm held up now because Turbo Tax wants mortgage interest but I do not have a mortgage and see no way to remove that requirement.

To get around this, you can review your entries to make sure nothing has been entered regarding mortgage interest.

Mortgage interest would be reported on a Form 1098.  You can get to the screens for entering mortgage interest by typing "1098" into the search bar and then click on "Jump to 1098." You can also get to them by typing "mortgage interest" into the search bar and click on" Jump to mortgage interest"

If you had mortgage interest on a prior years and filed with TurboTax it will ask you if you have mortgage interest to report. You are not required to report mortgage interest on your tax return.  You can only deduct mortgage interest if you itemize your deductions.

You can delete any mortgage interest worksheets and Form(s) 1098 that may be showing in your return.

To do this in TurboTax Desktop, you will:

  1. Open your return
  2. Click on "Forms" at the top left of your screen to switch to "Forms Mode"
  3. In your left panel click on any "Form(s) 1098" or "Mortgage Interest Worksheets" that may be there. You could have had a carry-over form a prior year.

To do this in TurboTax Online you will:

  1. Choose Tax Tools option on the left menu bar in the federal section of TurboTax
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Under Other Helpful Links choose Delete a form
  4. Find the Mortgage Interest Worksheet and Form 1098 and click on the option to delete it

It will look like this in TurboTax Desktop:
