Turbo tax deluxe 2024 wont allow me to enter Property taxes

I've entered my mortgage information which consists of only mortgage interest, no property taxes entered there.  When I go to enter property taxes, it just returns to the previous screen.

Turbo tax deluxe 2024 wont allow me to enter Property taxes

Entering Property Taxes:

  1. Open your return (if not already open).
  2. Enter "property taxes" in the Search box.
  3. Click on "Jump to property taxes" link.
  4. Enter "Yes" to the question, "Did you pay property or real estate taxes?".
  5. Enter property taxes information, and Continue.

Turbo tax deluxe 2024 wont allow me to enter Property taxes

Although the steps outlined did not work exactly, I was able to "jump" to the section via the search

methodology.  However, this took me to the same starting point which failed again.  A work around, described by another user was to go to schedule a worksheet, via "forms view" and enter the real estate property taxes directly into the form.  This was successful and, in fact, displayed the taxes in the "step by step" view.  However, I still could not update them via the step by step view.  Alterations have to be made manually in schedule A worksheet via "forms" view.  Obviously, there is still a bug in the software raising questions about its overall

reliability.

I think I figured it out, at least how to get it to work...at least it did for me.

(the software fix to prevent the problem in the first place, is still needed though).

If you used that Property Tax entry field last year, and if you used a Supporting Details (SD ) sheet for putting it in last year, then the SD sheet transferred (empty) into this year's forms...AND...the SD sheet is somehow blocking the "interview" for the Property Taxes entry, to transition to the proper entry page.

_______________

My fix:

1) Switch to Forms Mode.

2) Open the Tax and Interest Deduction Worksheet

3)  on line 2a of that worksheet....double-click on it.

4) Delete the SD worksheet by hitting the big red X

5) Either enter you Property taxes on that line....or...return to the interview and enter your property taxes using the interview ..as you normally would..shoud be OK now.

I found that if I re-introduced a new SD sheet for that line...the interview still proceeded as it normally should. So deleting the transferred-in SD sheet from 2023 was the main fix. and starting a new SD sheet doesn't re-introduce the problem.

Turbo tax deluxe 2024 wont allow me to enter Property taxes

I can't enter my property tax through your 2024 deductions & credits - your home - property tax. I get a white screen saying checking for property (real estate) tax deduction. I have the choice of "skip for now" or "enter info". If I chose "enter info" I'm back to the Your 2024 deductions and credits page. If I enter property tax int the search box, it gives me a link back to the blank / non-function page. I don't have a mortgage so no form 1098 to report.

Interestingly, the first Federal return I created this year allows me to enter property tax as it would normally. It's just the new return that I'm creating. Is this a known bug/issue or do I have a corrupted file?

@RonQ99

Read my workaround solution just above yours.

It appears to be an issue with a Supporting Details (SD) sheet that transferred in from last year's tax file.   Only happens with files that had an SD sheet last year

TTX software engineers know about it, but they only issue software updates on Wed or Thursday evenings, so update your software on Friday morning to check again then,........of course, perhaps the fix won't get done for another week?  2???, as no-one knows how much "fixin" is needed.

There is still a bug in the software.  While I have no Vehicle Registration expenses that can be claimed (Virginia), I do pay considerable Personal Property Taxes on my toys.  I could not enter my Personal Property Taxes on my vehicles and recreational vehicles.  Got a dialog box telling me tthere was a problem and to review the section I was just working on.  I used Supporting Details for the past several years and it has always worked flawlessly.  I list all of the vehicles (Cars, Boats, JetSkis, Trailers, Motorcycles, etc...) and the associated personal property taxes (both County and Town PP Taxes separately) one at a time on the SD.   I was only able to see that list of vehicles in the SD by doing what others have done, using the work around Forms View and then entering my 2024 PPT amounts to the listed that populated (Carried over from prior year).  The TT software is still broken and needs to be fixed.

You should be able to get to the Supporting Details list by putting your cursor in the personal property tax field and clicking Edit > Add Supporting Details at the top of the screen.

Once some Supporting Details have been added, you can double-click on the field for the Supporting Details page to open.  Also, if there are Supporting Details entered, you will not be able to edit the personal property tax amount directly.

Going to Forms mode to make changes should not be necessary.

If you can, please confirm whether these steps worked for you.  If they did not, then we can take the next step in getting the possible issue reported.

While I could not further edit the Personal Property Taxes when I went back into my return and went to the "Update" on that item, (likely because I filled out the supporting details using "Forms"?).  I just got a notification that I have maxed out the $10,000 federal deduction.  However, I did go into another field that did not have any entries or Supporting Details and used the "edit>add supporting details" and that opened up the SD pop up window.   I also confirmed the on other line items in my return were SD was used, I was able to double-click and open up the dialog box with the SD.

In prior years, when I had "Supporting Details" on my return, the next year, I was able to double-click in the box to get the SD from the prior year, absent the dollar figures.  This also worked in other line items this year, but did not in the Personal Property Tax section.  Hence, I used "Forms" to populate the data.  When I used Forms, my line item entries from the prior year were all there, except for the dollar figures, as expected.

Not sure why it worked everywhere else except for the Personal Property Tax section, but, I managed to simply work around it.

@cwolaw

Yep, the software writers continue to "update" various software sections...and BREAK what formerly worked for the SD sheets....either with the software coordinator's blessing...or with the coordinator's ignorance about how the SD sheets are "supposed" to work....thus failing to account for the SD sheet's existence.

Maybe they'll have the SD sheet access in the interview, corrected by next year.....or maybe mess up more sections.  Just be aware of how it worked (didn't work) this year, or put some notes in your in-home's paper folder of 2024 documents
