No, you can't take the remodeling as a deduction, it is a capital expense.  You can, however, enter it as an asset and depreciate the value over several years.

Are you a W-2 employee?  If so, job-related expenses including home office are no longer deductible under the new tax law.

Thanks. I was hoping for a different answer. I did try putting the info into TurboTax and it came up with a 4% annual deduction which correlates with 39 years.
