On my form review I am getting a check asking me to link form 1098 to schedule E by double clinking to link to the applicable school E worksheet. I did not add a form 1098 or worksheet. It is also telling me the form is from my bank.

What? No. If you have a 1098T it does not go on a schedule E.. You are looking at the wrong thing. You are confusing a form for mortgage interest with your 1098T (for tuition) or 1098E (for student loan interest you paid) . Look more carefully at your document. Is there a letter after the "1098?" Tell us what the document really says so we can tell you where to enter it.
And--are you still a student? Are you being claimed as a dependent by a parent or someone else?
The Form 1098 - Mortgage Interest Statement is issued by the mortgage lender to the borrower. If there is more than one borrower on the loan, the lender will issue the 1098 to the first person listed on the loan. The 1098 shows the mortgage interest paid on the loan during the tax year, and you are allowed to deduct that amount on the SCH E.
So if you did not receive a 1098 - Mortgage Interest Statement for 2018, that tells me there are several possibilities.
- You don't have a mortgage on the rental property because it is paid for in full.
- You are paying a seller-financed mortgage and the seller did not issue you a 1098 or a letter "in lieu of" a 1098 showing the mortgage interest you paid them.
- Maybe your lender "did" issue you a 1098, but only in electronic format. If so, you need to log in to your online lender, go to your mortgage and look for a link that reads something like "tax documents" and see if you find the 1098 there. If so, then print it.
I did not add a form 1098 or worksheet.
Yes you did, but just don't realize it. Start working through the Rental & Royalty Income (SCH E) section of the program again, and elect to update your rental property. Then start working through the Expenses section. A number of screens in you'll come to a screen, "Report Mortgage Interest". You entered something there for sure, even if you entered a zero. But you did enter something.
Now if you did not pay any mortgage interest, then all the fields on that screen need to be blank - not even a space. Then click the DONE button. On the "any other interest paid?" screen, that would need to be totally blank too. Then click Continue.
Select NO and continue. This brings you to the Misc Expenses screen. Just finish working this through to the end of the expenses section. Any changes are not saved until you get to a screen with a DONE button on it, and actually click that DONE button.
I did receive 2 forms 1098 with no letter after it and I went through the Schedule E for both properties. This is the first time this has come up so I wasn't sure of what to do, but after going through all the entries and again doing the review check it came up with the same errors
"Form 1098 (Bank of America) link to home mortgage wks should be linked to applicable home mortgage interest worksheet"
Form 1098 (Bank of America) link to home mortgage wks should be linked to applicable home mortgage interest worksheet."
I deleted all the 1098 information and re entered in again and entered all the rental property information, I will give it another try.
I did not have the rental information added the first time so I thought that would correct the problem but it didn't.
