I didn’t receive full stimulus checks, and read that we get rebates in this case. So I discovered that I didn’t enter stimulus information on my filed and accepted federal tax return. Does it cost extra to amend my federal tax return?

As stated, you need to make sure your tax return is fully processed by the IRS before making any changes to amend your return.  They may automatically adjust your refund if applicable. In the meantime you can check certain sections of your tax return and IRS data.

    1. Review the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet included with your tax return file.
    2. Check Line 30, Form 1040, to see if you have any credit on that line.
    3. Compare your refund received with the information above.
    4. Check Get My Payment - Select the button Get My Payment to see if your information is current based on the payments you did receive.  This is the information IRS has about your stimulus payments.
    5. Once you review, and if you determine you have not received all of your stimulus you can amend.

It does not cost extra to amend your tax return in TurboTax. You should wait until your tax return is processed, however, as the IRS may adjust it to reflect the rebate check that is due you.

So, wait until you receive your refund or if you owed taxes, until your payment clears before you amend your tax return.

The IRS said that I need to file taxes and show the amounts received. I did not do that—missed it completely—so how will they know 1) I received stimuli, and 2) received less than the full amount? This makes me think that I have to take the initiative by amending.

    THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING!!!!!
