State tax

I was working in CA last year 2023 from Jan to July and have W2 income.

From Aug onwards, I retired and moved to Utah permanently.

I believe I will need to file CA tax as I have W2 income while working there.

What about Utah since I have no W2 income ?

Okay, you need to enter your move dates in the Personal Information/My Info section of TurboTax.   Jan-July in CA and Aug-Dec in UT.   Enter all of your income in the federal section, and TurboTax will transfer everything to your state returns.  Since you have no UT income, that tax return will be empty.   All of your income will be CA income for 2023.   And next year, if you have income, you will file just the UT return.   Allocate your wages to CA.

File a part-year return for the state where you earned your income.   If you had income in UT, you would file that return also, but you didn't so TurboTax will produce an empty return.

If you need to add this information after you've begun your return:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and select My Info.
  2. A Your personal info screen appears.
  3. Question number 2 asks you the state(s) you lived in during 2023. Select your state of residence from a dropdown menu.  (UT)
  4. You'll also be asked if you lived in another state in 2023.  Answer Yes and a new section will appear asking for your previous state of residence. (CA)
  5. Fill out the date of when you moved to your current state.
  6. If the rest of your information is accurate, select Continue.

Yes, you must file a part-time resident income tax return for California.  You do not  need o file a Utah income tax return.

When you enter your Personal Information into the software, including which states you lived in during 2023 and for what periods of time, the program will also, determine which state tax returns you will need to file.

You must file a Utah TC-40 return if you:

  1. are a Utah resident or part-year resident who must file a federal return,
  2. are a nonresident or part-year resident with income from Utah sources who must file a federal return, or
  3. want a refund of any income tax overpaid.

To file a Utah return, first complete your federal return, even if you do not have to file with the IRS. You need the federal return information to complete your Utah return.

All income received during the period of residency is taxable in Utah, regardless of where that income is earned, unless specifically exempted. Income from Utah sources is taxable in Utah during the period of nonresidency.

Confusing advice!

You mentioned " ....   You do not  need o file a Utah income tax return............"

[1] Since

You must file a Utah TC-40 return if you:

  1. are a Utah resident or part-year resident who must file a federal return,

... since I have to file a federal return, so based on above statement I will need to file Utah TC-40 ??

[2] Turbotax Home and Business shows that that CA and UT state returns are needed.

The general rule is that you are taxed in the state where you live and also in the states where you work.

By any chance was your domicile in Utah prior to last year? Where were you living prior to 2023?

I ask to try to establish if California was your domicile in the start of 2023.

Also, you "retired" and moved to Utah. Are you getting Social Security? This would/might taxable in Utah.

@BillM223

Prior to 2023, I am always living in CA. Up to July 2023, I have W2 income from a CA company.

Only relocated to Utah in August 2023. Retired. Not working.

I am not old enough (53 years old)  to get social security :(
