Social Security Tax

I have 2 W2's that account for 173k...the SS tax is correct at 6.2% for each one, but the TT program doesn't appear to be making an adjustment for a total in excess of 142.8k.  Is there a way I can ensure it is accurately "reimbursing me" for excess tax paid?  It isn't explained anywhere in the taxes or deductions "explanations".

Yes, you can see that information if you preview your 1040:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then view your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu
  4. Scroll down until you see Schedule 3 Line 11 Excess social security and tier 1 RRTA tax withheld.

If your employers combined to withhold more than $8,853.60 in Social Security, the excess amount should appear here. If you do not have a Schedule 3 or it does not appear there, make sure that both W-2s are in your name and the social security tax is correctly entered. Upon entering your second W-2, TurboTax should have notified you that you had excess withheld and you are going to get that back on your tax return.
