It is saying that form 8889-t: line 12 wks should be blank. Then it says that I must enter excess contributions on line E of Line 9 smart workbook. Help Please!

I have read all the posts. I have deleted my w2, 1099 and  8889 forms 3 times and I am still in the same loop for

Line 12 Wks, Line B should be blank. There are no Excess employer contributions. ........

Line 12 wks, line b $xxxx.

1) I DO NOT have an HDHP

2) I do have an HSA that my employer contributed too. (I did not)

3) Yes In the interview process I said I WOULD take the XXX dollar amount out before the deadline.

I am not sure how to fix this.

Help.

It is saying that form 8889-t: line 12 wks should be blank. Then it says that I must enter excess contributions on line E of Line 9 smart workbook. Help Please!

I am puzzled by your statement:

"1) I DO NOT have an HDHP

2) I do have an HSA that my employer contributed too. (I did not)

3) Yes In the interview process I said I WOULD take the XXX dollar amount out before the deadline. "

and you said:

"

Line 12 Wks, Line B should be blank. There are no Excess employer contributions. ........

Line 12 wks, line b $xxxx.

"

But if you did not have an HDHP and your employer made contributions to your HSA, then you SHOULD have excess employer contributions. Who said "There are no Excess employer contributions." - you or the software?

You said in the interview that you would withdraw the excess "$xxxx", so this amount SHOULD appear on line 12 B in the Smart Worksheet.

I don't understand what you are trying to fix. Are you getting an error message, like in the Review? This entry on 12 B should be the amount that you said that you would withdraw after the end of 2020 but before the due date of the return.

I saw this discussion in the community from 2019 - is this something I still have to do in 2020 turbo tax? I am getting this error - I am part of a HSA but my error is asking  for Excess withdrawn after the end of the year.

It wants an amount here and I dont have any amount nor did INtuit give me a 8889-T form.

Is there a fix here so I can complete my taxes?

Thanks

@AmyJo5

Are you getting a message like this? "Form 8889-T Line 12 WKS, Line B should be blank"

If so, please read on.

Sometimes when you enter an amount into TurboTax, it hangs on to a value even if it doesn't apply any longer, but because of the dynamic nature of the screens, you don't get to see the same screen again to fix it.

Line 12B is the excess HSA contributions withdrawn after the end of the year. This refers to the screen on which you indicated how much excess contributions you agreed to withdraw before the end of the year when TurboTax told you that you had excess contributions.

But if you fix some other entries so that you don't have an excess any longer, TurboTax still has this number and you won't see the same screen again to zero it out.

So the thing to do is to delete all your HSA information and re-enter it.

Please do it this way:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. return to the HSA interview (Do a Search for hsa and click on the jump-to result)

I think part of the problem is that I also do not have a 8889-T form - it keeps referencing this form and I dont have nor can I get one from my HSA account

See step #6 above:

"6. return to the HSA interview (Do a Search for hsa and click on the jump-to result)"

So was your error message about line 12B?

The 8889-T is generated by TurboTax - you don't get it in the mail.

You do have HDHP insurance coverage, right, and you have an HSA?

I am having the same issue, I have deleted it twice and still the same issue. It has to be a problem with turbo tax and an error on the form somehow. So frustrating!

I went through all the suggestions on here and found nothing .

Mine was required to be blank and after putting “0” and plenty of other numbers. Leaving it blank, literally nothing in that field, finally accepted the form and I was able to submit.

Just literally leave the field as "blank" / remove any digits in the field.

Not zero (0) or any character. just "blank".

I was able to fix this easily by leaving it completely blank.  Do not put a 0 - just leave remove any number(s) showing in the field and leave it blank.  It will accept it.
