taxpayer and spouse

I am the main user of my Turbotax account. I have been using Turbotax for about 4 years. I got married August, 2020. From the beginning of the year until August, 2020 I had health insurance through healthcare.gov, once married I switched to my husband's work insurance. My 1095A has $0.00 in all boxes from September to December.

After filling in the 1095A information it asks if any other situations apply where I mark that I was married in August. My question lies with the following question "Who was the primary policy holder?" where I mark either 'Taxpayer' or 'Spouse.' Am I the taxpayer since it is my account? Or is my husband the taxpayer because be makes more money? The 'Taxpayer' vs 'Spouse' question equals out to about a $600 difference in my tax return.

taxpayer and spouse

The taxpayer is the person whose name appears first on the Form 1040. If it's your TurboTax account and you are the first person on the tax return, you're the taxpayer and your husband is the spouse. You can preview you 1040 to check.

Since you had the 1095-A health insurance policy, you, as the taxpayer, are the primary policy holder.

  • Your 1095-A should include info for everybody on your return who was enrolled in a Marketplace plan, and is required to calculate the Premium Tax Credit.
