on 12/31/2022 they have to be under the age of 17. Being 17 disqualifies them for the child tax credit and the additional child tax credit. see form 8812 line 4.
your child may qualify for the $500 credit for other dependents 8812 line 7
but that too can be limited if your income is too high. the rules and limitations are complex so a review of the 8812 is warranted. then if you have any questions post back in this thread.
and part of the confusion is that the Child Tax Credit did include 17 years olds in 2021, but it was for that one year only.
in 2021, the CTC covered children 'under 18'.
in 2022 (and prior to 2021), the CTC covered children 'under 17'.
