Do I need to file an amended tax return if I accidentally selected that I can be claimed as a dependent, but actually cannot? Nobody will be claiming me as a dependent on any return. Do I need to amend or will the IRS assume I am independent because nobody claims me?

You would need to amend your return after the first return has been processed and any refund or tax liability has been settled.

You should prepare an amended return to see if your tax changes. If not then you don't need to file the amended return.
