How to file the Roth conversion?

Hi,

I rolled over $16K from my 401K account to a rollover IRA account, then did a Roth conversion of $16K to a Roth IRA account. How to file the tax for the Roth conversion?  Thank you.

How to file the Roth conversion?

You should have a 1099R from the 401K for the rollover to the IRA.  And another 1099R from the IRA conversion to the ROTH IRA.   Did you get the two 1099Rs?

Just enter the 1099Rs one at a time.  After you enter the 1099R keep going.  It will ask what you did with it.  If you get stuck on a question post back. And you do not enter either one as a new IRA contribution under deductions.

Enter a 1099R under
Federal Taxes
Wages & Income
Then scroll way down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
Then IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) – Click Start

Don't type the bank name or try to import it.
At the bottom pick - Change How I enter my Form
Then on the next screen pick - I'll Type it in Myself

How to file the Roth conversion?

If both the rollover from your 401(k) to the Traditional IRA account and the Roth Conversion were both in 2023, you should have received a Form 1099-R for each transaction.

First, input your Form 1099-R from the rollover, which should have Code G in box 7.

  1. Select Wages & Income
  2. Locate the Retirement Plans and Social Security section and select Show more, then select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  3. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-R in 2023?, then Continue.
    • If you land on the screen, Your 1099-R Entries, select Add Another 1099-R
  4. Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and walk through the interview questions.

Next, input your Form 1099-R from the Roth Conversion.

  1. Add Another 1099-R
  2. Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and follow the instructions
  3. Answer the questions on the following screens, until you reach Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion.
  4. Select I converted some or all of it to a Roth IRA and Continue
  5. Next, choose Yes, all of this money was converted to a Roth IRA and click Continue
  6. Continue answering questions until you come to the screen, Review your 1099-R info.
