Hi, I just had a baby in 2021. I did not get any "advance payments" in 2021. So, I expect a child tax credit of $3,600, but Turbotax says I only get $2,950. Why?

I specifically entered "0" for advance payments in Turbotax, but it still acts like my credit should be 2,950 instead of 3,600.

Do you have a high income?

Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) has to be under the following amount to receive the full credit:

  • $150,000 if you're Married Filing Jointly or a Qualifying Widow
  • $112,500 if you're filing as Head of Household, or
  • $75,000 if you're Married Filing Separately or Single

Do you have other children?

Be sure you said the new baby lived with you the WHOLE YEAR!  Go back and check that under My Info.

If you had a child born in 2021- Add them under My Info. You need to answer 2 questions…..

Did your child live with you for the whole year? Answer YES even if they were born late in the year (even on Dec 31).

Then was at least half of child's expenses paid by CHILD? Usually is NO.

Yep, it was my AGI that was a bit high. Thanks.

My only complaint is that Turbotax didn't explain this even when I clicked on those links where it says it will explain how it calculates your numbers.
