Form 8949: How do I manually change a cost basis figure on the 8949. I tried the override feature, but the box remains pink. What do I do? This is major!

The financial institution reported only the cost basis for one share when 400 were actually sold. How do I manually change this? It is a major concern!

When you posted your question you selected TurboTax Premier Online from the list indicating what product you are using. See the product indicator to the right of your screen name at the top of the question. But your description of trying to override form 8949 sounds like you are using the CD/Download TurboTax software.

You cannot make the correction directly on Form 8949. Furthermore, you don't just change the basis that was reported on your Form 1099-B or equivalent statement from the financial institution. You have to enter the correction as an adjustment. The Step-by-Step interview in TurboTax Premier handles this situation easily. First remove any overrides that you made. This is very important. Then go back to Step-by-Step mode and edit the transaction in question. On the screen where you entered the details of the sale from the 1099-B, click the button that says "I'll enter additional info on my own." On the next screen, enter the correct cost basis in the box labeled "Corrected cost basis." TurboTax will make the appropriate adjustment entries on Form 8949.

If the button isn't on the screen with the details of the sale, it may be because you already clicked that button previously. In that case, just click Continue and the next screen will have the box for "Corrected cost basis."

Hi,

Is this process still valid? I can not find "I'll enter additional info on my own." button while I am filling my 1099-B. My main issue is I need to add some adjustment amount manually since this income has been already added to my W2 by my employer. I would appreciate if you can help me on this.

@PedroFontova  After you enter the basic information about the sale, click Continue and proceed through the screens. A few screens later you will get to a screen that says "Select any less common adjustments that apply." Check the box for the reason for the adjustment, and it will give you a place to enter the amount of the adjustment. The adjustment code is determined by which box you check.

Thank you much for the detailed instructions.

Question about your instructions:  in the end did you provide instruction for the Online version or the Download version?

I am using Online Premier and I'm almost finished. But I see that I need to make adjustments to basis on form 8949. When I view the Investments Sales Summary pages (3),  there are no Edit Buttons for sales listed on pages 1 and 2; only page three has an edit button by each sale.

Suggestions?

Sorry, forget my recent question; I found the Edit Buttons.

I needed to move to the far right of the page with slider at the bottom.

I'm greatly relieved.

Thanks any way!
