Ohio disability benefits deduction

I retired with a disability pension from my former employer that will remain in place until I reach age 65.  At age 65 the benefit and plan will convert to a normal pension.  The 1099-R that I received for that income lists distribution code 3, “disability” in box 7.  Am I able to add that taxable amount to my taxable Social Security amount listed in box 6b from form 1040 to be used for Disability benefits deduction on my Ohio tax form?

Yes, if your taxable Social Security benefits are for SSDI (Social Security Disability Income), you can add that amount to your taxable disability pension amount.

You can deduct disability benefits to the extent that they are included in your Federal Adjusted Gross Income for your Ohio exclusion.

Thank you for the information that you offered and for your timely response.  Just to help confirm that I am understanding this correctly - Working with Ohio form IT 1040, Schedule of adjustments, I would enter the amount from IRS 1040 line 6B, $20,000, into line 14 for taxable Social Security Benefits.  Then I would also be able to enter the amount from my 1099-R, $13,000, into line 34 for Medical Disability Benefits and use the total of $33k for my deduction on line 2B of my Ohio IT 1040?  And I can do that for 3 more years until I turn age 65 when my disability pension converts to a normal retirement pension?
