You lose the child tax credit when the child turns 17. When they are older than 16, you get the $500 credit for other dependents instead of the child tax credit.
The child tax credit reduces when the child turns 17. The credit for $2,000 is for children under the age of 17 and the modified adjusted gross income is less than $400,000 for Married Filing Joint or $200,000 for other filing statuses. When the child is 17 or older the credit reduces to $500.
