Medicare Part B premium for 2019

My AGI is just over 170,00. Will I have to pay a higher Part B premium in 2019 or has the 170,000 threshold been increased.

Medicare Part B premium for 2019

For 2018 and 2019 the Medicare Part B Premium will be.

  • Individuals with income between $85,000 to $107,000 or married couples with income between $170,000 to $214,000, the Part B monthly premium amount would be Standard premium + $53.50 = $187.50.
  • Individuals with income between $107,000 to $133,500 or married couples with income between $214,000 to $267,000, the Part B monthly premium amount would be Standard premium + $133.90 = $267.90.
The income thresholds that determine the income-related premium payments are frozen through 2019, but will increase by about 2 percent in 2020 and will be indexed after that for general price inflation.

If you're just over the $170,000 threshhold and have an IRA, consider making some qualified charitable distributions (qcd's) to bring yourself back under $170,000.  You could always make a contribution late in the current year that you otherwise would have made sometime in the following year.

You do need to be at least 70-1/2 for this to work though.
