Box 10 on my 1098 is blank, but I paid property taxes.

Should I enter the amount I paid and then check the box that says the amount entered is different than my 1098?

Lisa995 is correct that the property taxes might be anywhere on the 1098 form or on the next page on the escrow summary or anywhere in the lender’s statement.

However, also keep in mind that the lender is not required to print your property taxes on the form 1098 at all. If you have another method of determining your property taxes actually paid – whether from your separate escrow statement or from your county tax collector’s office (or corresponding agency), then enter that number in the appropriate place (Federal Taxes->Deductions & Credits->Your Home->Property (Real Estate) Taxes).

Do NOT check the box “that says the amount entered is different than my 1098” because that checkbox is only for when the 1098 has a different number than what you actually paid, not no number at all.

If you pay the property taxes through an escrow account, some lenders include the amount in another area of the paper they send...B of A used to put them on the back of the page at the top, other lenders include them up at the top of form somewhere.
