Medical expenses

Is the medical deduction based off of amount paid in the year or amount incurred in the year? I have medical expenses exceeding $25,000, that havent been paid, but are awaiting judgement in civil court.

Medical expenses

It is based on the amount actually paid during the tax year, 2016, regardless of when the services were received or billed.

Is there a certain % of income that the expense has to exceed for the  state of Texas?

Texas has no state income tax, report the medical expenses on your Federal return. Medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income will be deductible if you are itemizing your deduction.

I do not know how this number got into Turbo.  I thought  I declined to specify any Medical costs because they would be too low.  Help

If you receive Social Security benefits and you entered an amount withheld from those benefits that pays for Medicare or a supplemental medical policy, then those amounts are automatically included as a medical expense without you needing to enter it again in the medical expense section of your return.

Why is turbo tax not allowing me to enter medical expenses.  When I go to enter an amount a blue bubble appears and I can not put in an amount.

@Scharles22 When you click on Medical expenses, the program should run through the various expenses asking for input rather than one blue spot. If you are using the desktop version, update your program, If you are online,

  1. Log out of your return
    1. Try one or more of the following:
      • Don't use Internet Explorer.
      • Clear cache and cookies,
      • Sign in using a different browser.
      • Sign in using a different device.
  2. Log back into your return.

You can fill this form out for someone to call you if still having trouble. It could be a long wait.
