Is Form 8936 Bugged? Can't figure out how to complete the form, got a letter saying I need to. (Filed already)

We bought a used EV that qualified for the $4k credit per form 8936.  The credit was transferred to the dealership at the time of the purchase.  After we filed, however, we got a letter saying that we were "required to file Form 8936 and 8936 Schedule A."

 

Now, we did file both of these, but they look really incomplete.  

 

TurboTax will NOT prompt us to fill in anything past Line 13b -- it looks like I should be filling in a few of the boxes below that (d, e, f, etc.) and  - most importantly - it NEVER prompted us to put in a sale price!  It just assumed that the 4k would be automatically accepted.  On line 13b it does say, "If you transferred the credit amount to the dealer at the time of sale, stop here and see instructions."  But there are no directions.

 

Is this a bug?  Am I missing something?  Was the letter just a form letter that got to us after we filed?

Can you clarify if you are having an issue with TurboTax not asking all the interview questions in the amendment process or was this when you originally filed your return?

It never asked for more information - it didn't ask the interview questions, as you put it, past a certain point.  

 

I just can't tell if it was filed correctly, and the letter was just a form letter saying I needed to file a 8936 (which I did!) or if it was a letter telling me that I hadn't filled it out entirely.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

 

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
