Inherited IRA

When filling out the IRA 1099-R information, toward the bottom, it gives you some choices under the title: Inherited IRA or Type of IRA."   I have an IRA which is my own, and did not inherit.  If I choose the option of "Treat as recipient's own (This is treated as a rollover)," I end up paying less taxes. 

I can't see anywhere in Turbo Tax where it asks if an IRA was inherited, or did I miss that? Would IRS flag my return if I claimed to have an inherited IRA, when in fact, I did not?  Thx

Can you post a screenshot?   It knows it is from a IRA by the X in the little IRA box between boxes 7&8.   What code is in box 7?   Code 4  is for inherited accounts.   @dmertz

If the IRA is not an inherited IRA, none of the first four boxes under Inherited IRA or Type of IRA of TurboTax's 1099-R form are not permitted to be marked.

In fact, you should not be making ANY entries in forms mode of the desktop version.  You should be entering the Form 1099-R in step-by-step mode where TurboTax will guide you so that you do not mistakenly mark one of the boxes that indicate an inherited IRA.  If you rolled over the distribution, TurboTax will allow you to indicate that.  If you did not roll over the distribution, you should be paying taxes on the distribution.

I was not able to take a screen shot, but box 7 is marked with a 7, and the next box (IRA/SEP) is empty. Since this is not an inherited IRA, box 7 is marked appropriately, and not marked with a G, which would have indicated "death," and therefore, I cannot "treat it as my own," in the area below.

Code 7 with the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box unmarked indicates that the account not an IRA.  Therefore, no box under Inherited IRA or type of IRA is permitted to be marked.
