I am self-employed and moved to Indiana the end of May. TurboTax automatically put $439 in the field for IN county tax. But "learn more" says this: "If you did not live in Indiana on January 1, 2024 then you are not subject to Indiana county tax unless you worked in Indiana on January 1, 2024, in which case the county tax is calculated based on the county of employment." I neither lived in nor worked in IN on 1/1. So why is that field filled in and how do I change it to $0, assuming I should?

Where does this 439 appear?
Which county tax does it show?
Do you have any income documents with local tax withheld?
What state did you live in prior to June?
Where does this 439 appear?
When going through step-by-step, it's the first line on the screen labeled "Take a look at IN credits and taxes."
When I click edit next to the amount, TT tells me this is what it calculated based on IN income.
Which county tax does it show?
It doesn't.
Do you have any income documents with local tax withheld?
No. I'm self-employed and make estimated tax payments.
What state did you live in prior to June?
IL. TT automatically filled out those forms.
Are you using Desktop?
I cannot recreate that tax.
Are you filing a Part-Year Indiana return?
Do you have the screen asking for the residency dates?
If you are using Desktop, can you look at the Indiana return to see if there is a county on Form IT-40PNR or county tax on line 19
HERE is how to look at your returns using Online but you will only see a summary for Indiana, look for county tax on that summary
I'm using desktop home and business version.
TT insists I lived in IN on 1/1 and filled out the part-time resident form accordingly. Somewhere in either the federal or IL forms, I put IN resident starting 5/24, although I can't find the screen that says "State residency information," as in the screenshot below. The 2-digit county code is filled in at the top of IT-40PNR, but the intro to that field also says "where you lived and worked on 1/1. It's not filled in toward the bottom of that form.
This is weird. When I logged into TT again a few minutes ago, I got the screen to go over IN taxes again. I clicked to do so and got the screens I needed to input the correct dates and percentages of income and deductions, which I couldn't find a way to access before. So I'm OK now.
Thanks for working with me.
