The 2021 child tax credit is only available for children who were YOUNGER than 18 at the end of 2021. If your dependent was 18 or older you get the $500 credit for other dependents.
Well, in both of our cases, the child WAS under 18 when the government determined we needed the extra money and started sending it. Now its created a tax burden in my case that we were not expecting because it doubled the amount we should have received based on having one child under 18 for the full 2021 tax year. This CTC is an absolute disaster and is now creating a greater tax liablility for my family. How does that help us? Thanks US Goverment. Sorry----the child tax credit was changed for 2021. Before they changed it you would not have received any CTC for a child older than 16. They changed it to include kids who were under 18. So you got the new increased CTC in advance for a child who would not even have been eligible had the law not changed. You received the money ahead of time. You have to enter the amount that you received. The amount you can still get ---if any--- will be reconciled against the amount received.
