If I sold a home but do not have capital gains tax do I need to upgrade to premier?

It depends.  The IRS will want to know that you have done the worksheet to calculate the sale of the home to ensure that there is nothing taxable (especially if you have received a 1099-S that reports the sale to the IRS).  To do the worksheet in TurboTax, you do need to use Premier.  This FAQ provides more information:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3300213.

Having said this, there is no form that reports the sale of primary home exclusion referred to in the FAQ that gets reported to the IRS.  Because of this, if you know for a certainty that you do not have to report the income from the sale, you can opt to not do the worksheet and use a lower version of TurboTax if your return qualifies for that.
