If I only contributed $7000 and I am over 55 with a family hdhp/hsa why am I being told I am over the contribution limit?

Assuming you are not covered by Medicare, that should not be over your allowed HSA contribution amount. The first thing to check is whether you have entered the type of HDHP you have for the year. This is how to do that.

  1. Open you return and  select Federal.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits on the left.
  3. Scroll down the list to find Medical, expand the section.
  4. Click Start or Revisit to the right of HSA, MSA Contributions.
  5. Select the type of plan you have, click Continue.
  6. Continue through the screens until you get to, Was (name) covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2022?
  7. Select Yes, and complete the rest of the section.

The HSA is handled in 3 parts in the TT program :

First the contribution:

Next the limitations screen to confirm you are eligible to make the contributions:

Until you complete the HSA portion of the TurboTax interview to establish your eligibility for an HSA contribution, TurboTax will treat the amount entered on the W-2 form as an excess HSA contribution.

And lastly any distribution:

did you enter yes to having non-HDHP coverage?   certain coverage, but not medicare, that covers only specific items are ignored for this purpose so the answer should be no:  examples: dental, accident, disability, vision, telehealth, specific diseases or illnesses - not all-inclusive
