I take it that you entered an amount of the excess to withdraw, and now you want to change that amount - but you can't see that screen again?

The safest - although brute force - way to fix this is to do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 8889-T, 8889-S (if one), and 1099-SA (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview. If you still have an excess contribution, you will have a chance to enter the correct amount withdrawn

*** Note ***

Taxpayers frequently make entries that make TurboTax think that you have an excess when you don't. If you aren't sure why you had an excess contribution in the first place, please read the following:

One of the purposes of the HSA interview is to determine your annual HSA contribution limit.

As you probably know, the maximum limits in 2019 are:

  • $3,500 - individual with self-coverage
  • $7,000 - individual with family coverage
  • If the HSA owner is 55 or older, then you add $1,000 to these amounts.

However, these limits assume that you were in an HSA all year. If you left the HSA during the year or started Medicare or had one of a number of change events, then the limit is reduced

There are several major culprits for excess contributions (other than just actually contributing more than the limit).

First, if you did not complete the HSA interview - that is, go all the way until you are returned to the "Your Tax Breaks" page - the limit still might be set to zero, causes a misleading excess contribution message.

There are questions all the way to the end of the interview that affect the annual contribution limit.

Second, it is not unusual for taxpayers to accidentally duplicate their contributions by mistakenly entering what they perceive to be "their" contributions into the second line on the "Let's enter your HSA contributions" screen (see screenshot below).

Normally, any employee who made contributions to his/her HSA through a payroll deduction plan has the contributions included in the amount with code "W" in box 12 on the W-2. This is on the first line on this screen (above). Don't enter the code W amount anywhere on the return other than on the W-2 page.

Third, if you weren't in the HSA all 12 months, then the annual contribution limit is reduced on a per month ratio.

Fourth, if you had a carryover of excess contributions from the previous tax year, then this carryover is applied to the current tax year as a personal contribution, which could cause an excess condition in the current tax year as well. But note: if you had an excess contribution in the previous tax year but "cured" it by withdrawing the excess in early in this tax year, then do NOT report an "overfunding" on your current tax return.

Fifth, the Family limit ($7,000)(2019) is for the aggregate of contributions by both taxpayers, even if both taxpayers have their own HSAs. That is, one taxpayer can’t contribute $7,000 to his/her HSA and the other contribute $3,500 to the other HSA – the $7,000  limit applies to the aggregate of all HSA contributions credited to the family (in this case, the excess contributions would be $3,500).

I still have the"excess employer contributions withdrawn" amount.  I have deleted the w2 and the HSA 1099sa.  Then I entered them both manually.  In fact I did this multiple times.  Recently I deleted both forms and just entered w2.  No HSA form.  It still shows excess.

Please help. I can't get rid of it.

Be sure to complete Form 8606 to report nondeductible contributions. Similar to requesting a withdrawal of an excess IRA contribution, you should contact your bank or investment firm to request the recharacterization.  Remember, it asks if the Excess has been withdrawn and you say yes if you intend to withdraw it by April 15th.

You tell TurboTax that the excess has been removed so a penalty is not applied and the excess does not carry forward. You would enter $7500 as the total amount of your contribution.  As you proceed with the entry, Turbo Tax will indicate that you have an excess contribution of $1500 and will ask you if you plan on withdrawing this before the due date of your return.(April 15)

Since you have already withdrawn the excess contribution, you will say "yes".The penalty will not be applied based on this answer..

If, for some reason, you want to change and not withdraw the Excess Contribution.  These instructions will take you back to that area and click edit then walk through the interview questions to make the changes.

To enter or edit your Roth IRA contribution:

  1. On the left side of your screen, click Federal.
  2. At the top of your screen choose Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Retirement and Investments.
  4. Click Start on Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions.

When you deleted the W-2 and the 1099-SA, did you also delete both the 8889-T and 8889-S (if one)?
