Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I'm trying to file my taxes for 2020, but for some reason, TurboTax keeps saying I have a foreign account. I don't have any foreign accounts.

I keep going back and forward with the TurboTax system. But it just keeps saying I do!

It might be that some of the information related to foreign account got carried over from last year.  If you do not have a foreign account in the year of 2020, you can simply remove a Form 8938 "Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets" from the program.  Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • Select Tax Tools, click on the drop down arrow
  • Select Tools
  • Under Other helpful links, choose Delete a form
  • Select Delete next to the form 8938 and other worksheets about foreign account and Continue with My Return

A Form 8938 is used when you have specified foreign financial assets and the total value of all the foreign assets in which you have an interest is more than the appropriate reporting threshold.  For details, click here: https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8938

I believe I figured out the problem. My account kept saying I had a 1099-OID. I tried using your advice and try deleting it under 'Delete a form,' but I couldn't find it anywhere. I ended up using the Clear & Start over option. I went through everything again, and I made sure to click on NO for foreign accounts. The 1099-OID form wasn't there until I entered in the 1099-INT info. I, again, chose the option to auto-fill in the information for Goldenman Sachs, Marcus. Once I completed the Marcus, the 1099-OID reappeared. So I ended deleting the Marcus 1099-INT form, and I entered the info myself. Now the 1099-OID is no longer there.

Yes, sometimes when you import from a brokerage, these errors sometimes appear. Entering manually more often then not solves the problem.
