I have a regular job and a home office for a different job. Can I deduct miles for my trip from the regular job back to the home office?

I commute 43 miles one way every day for a regular job. I am also self employed with a home office. Its my practice to leave the regular job, drive to my home office, and put in a couple of hours at the home office for the self employed job.

Can I deduct the miles on the trip from the regular job to the home office?

I have an attorney (regular job) in the family who also has a farm (self employment) on which his home is located. It was his understanding he could not deduct the commute for his trip to work but he could deduct the miles for the trip back to the farm. It was his assertion that I could also deduct the miles for the trip from my regular job to my home office.

Thoughts?

Sorry, no. You would have to commute home anyway, which is not deductible.

Just found this in the AnswerXchange- is it no longer true?

"Can I deduct mileage if I have more than one job but my second job is a home based business?
Can I deduct round trip mileage, or only one job to the other, or none.

Yes, if you regularly work at two or more places in one day, whether or not for the same employer, you can deduct mileage from your first job location to the second job location.

Note: The mileage from your home to the 1st job and from the last location to your home would be commuting miles and are not deductible.
