You'll get Form 1099-SA if you paid for medical or other expenses from your HSA or MSA during the tax year. It's best to enter your 1099-SA before you enter your medical expenses so TurboTax can properly calculate your medical expense deduction. On the other hand, Form 5498-SA reports contributions to your Health Savings Account (HSA), Archer MSA, or Medicare Advantage MSA. You don't enter this form into TurboTax; your account custodian sends it to you for informational purposes only. We recommend that you keep it with your tax return records.

To enter your 1099-SA, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax, if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside your program, search for 1099-SA;
  3. Select Jump To 1099-SA. This will take you to the Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2021 screen.
  4. Select the appropriate box(es) and Continue.
  5. Answer Yes when asked if you used your HSA or MSA to pay for anything.
  6. Free Edition or TurboTax Live Basic: Follow the onscreen instructions to upgrade to Deluxe.
  7. Enter the info from your 1099-SA (this form cannot be imported).
  8. When you get to Here's what we have so far, select Add Another 1099-SA or Done, as appropriate.
