Hi, We had a baby in May of 2021. I understand that the Advance Child Tax Credit payments were based on 2020 return information, so it makes sense how the IRS didn't know to send me any advanced payments. I was expecting to receive the credit (or at least part of it) as I now file our 2021 return. From what I can tell, Turbo Tax has determined only a flat $500 child tax credit (line 19 of the return). Our AGI is $215k. Based on what I've read the child tax credit phases out in two parts - the first starting when AGI goes over $150k for MFJ at which point the credit will decrease to $2,000. The next phase out would not occur until AGI is over $400k, which ours is not. So my question is why do I not see a $2,000 credit on line 28, but just the $500 on line 19?
Thanks!

Be sure you said the new baby lived with you the WHOLE YEAR! Go back and check that under My Info.
If you had a child born in 2021- Add them under My Info. You need to answer 2 questions…..
Did your child live with you for the whole year? Answer YES even if they were born late in the year (even on Dec 31).
Then was at least half of child's expenses paid by CHILD? Usually is NO.
Check 1040 line 28 for the Child Tax Credit. It may have been added before you noticed or got to that section. It will either increase your refund or reduce a tax due.
You should also get the 1,400 Recovery rebate credit for a baby on line 30.
Before filing, You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
Thanks for your help - but I confirmed that both answers are correct - Lived with the Whole Year, and "NO". It's still not showing the updated credit amount, nor the $1,400 on line 30.
Which box is checked at the top of 1040 for your child? If the Child Tax Credit box isn't checked you answered something wrong. Try deleting the baby and re enter him under My Info.
Thanks! I think that was the trick, once I deleted and re-entered his info the $2k filled out like I expected. I'm just not 100% sure of that recovery rebate as we were not eligible for any of the other stimulus checks. And the backup worksheet makes it look like since our AGI is over $160k, we can't take that credit. Thanks though!
