How do I fix the HSA distribution value on Schedule 1?

There are at least two different ways to have HSA dollars appear on line 8 of Schedule 1 (1040):

1. enter a 1099-SA distribution that was not for qualified medical expenses

2. make excess contributions to your HSA

Both of these situations should have been reported to you in the HSA interview.

It can happen that numbers get "stuck", that it, they get entered or calculated but won't go away because the nature of the dynamic screen selection in TurboTax means that you might never see the same screen again.

If after trying this or that, one solution that always works is the HSA Reset. This is not a button but a series of steps which ensures that all HSA data is removed from your return. This permits you to re-enter the HSA data on a clean slate.

***Reset***

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....unless you didn't have an HSA, in which case you just continue with your return.
