Help with how to do the community Property income?

To allocate your community property in TurboTax, use the magnifying glass to search for community property. Click on the link that says jump to community property.

On the next screen, answer yes to Do you have community adjustments or community property to report?. Follow the next few screens to report your adjustments to income and tax withholding.

Whether income is considered community property and how it must be allocated between spouses depends on the state, so you will need to be familiar with your state's law's. Typically, each of you would need to report half of each other's income and tax withholdings.

For example, if you earn $50,000 and your spouse earns $60,000, you would each report $55,000 income ($50,000 + $60,000 = $110,000/2 = $55,000).

Help with how to do the community Property income?

Using the Search feature and following the "jump to the Community Property section" brings my TurboTax Desktop to the "Federal Review" page where it asks if I've entered all my tax forms.  There's no obvious place to enter Community Property adjustments.  Is there a way to manually navigate to the right section?

Help with how to do the community Property income?

To find the interview for Community Property Income, Form 8958, try the steps in this help article:

First, use your community property state rules to determine what adjustments you expect to enter in TurboTax. Often one return has an addition to income and withholding, while the other will have a reduction (subtraction) to income and withholding.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return
  2. Search (using the magnifying glass at the upper right of your screen) for 8958 and select the Jump to link.
  3. On the Community Property Income screen, select Yes and follow the instructions to enter any income adjustments.

After you've told us your income adjustments, you'll have to fill out the community property worksheet. The worksheet shows how the income on this tax return compares with the other taxpayer's return.

Your community property worksheet should appear right after you complete your income adjustments.

If you can't find the worksheet:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for community property worksheet and select the Jump to link.

Try searching for the "jump to" link when you have just opened TurboTax Online or while in the Income section. You can also try clicking instead on the "help" question mark instead of the "search" magnifying glass. Also, if you have not yet completed entering all of your income, TurboTax will direct you to return to the income section that's incomplete. You should have entered all income items before completing the community property worksheet.

If the "jump to" step doesn't work, if you use the Desktop/Download version of TurboTax, you can access the Form 8958 in Forms mode, To access Form 8958, if you are using the Deluxe version of TurboTax Desktop, click Forms on the black bar at the top.

Click "Open Form"

Type in "8958"

Click "Open Form"

You can make the entries directly on the form. Be sure not to override any entries that are already populated, as this could lead to errors.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) created Form 8958 to allow couples in community property states to correctly allocate income to each spouse that may not match what is reported to the IRS. See this TurboTax tips article for more information on Form 8958 and community property. The rules for the state returns may differ.

If you are filing a joint return, you don't need to do a community property split.
