Amend the 2019 tax return for the credit in 2019.
See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2019 tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-turbotax-online-return/01/27577
For the 2020 tax return -
To enter Home Energy Credits -
Or enter home energy improvement in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to home energy improvement
On the screen Tell Us How Much You Paid for Energy-Saving Improvements -
For HVAC, electric heat pump water heater, natural gas, propane, or oil water heater, and a stove that burns biomass fuel to heat your home or heat water. Enter the cost in the box labeled Energy-Efficient Building Property.
You can only claim the improvement in the year you actually made it.
Start by claiming the full credit for 2020 because that tax return will be processed faster and your refund will be paid faster. The maximum credit for an efficient air conditioner is 10% of the purchase and installation price up to $300. You will find it in the deductions and credit page under the section for “you’re home“. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, keep going in the section. The energy credits for solar and other forms of alternative energy are in the same section as the credits for energy efficient improvements and I don’t know which comes first.
You are also limited to a $500 lifetime maximum for this type of credit, so if you ever took the energy-efficient credit before, the amount you can take now will be reduced.
Then, you can think about filing the amended 2019 return. Remember that you have a lifetime limit of $500 for energy efficient improvements. No matter what the cost of the air conditioner in to 2019 was, don’t enter more than the amount you have left under your $500 lifetime cap including the credit you just claimed for 2020.
