Form 1095-A and S Corp K1's

We have an S Corp which we get a small w2 from and the rest shows up on K1.  We get our health insurance through some market and receive a 1095-A.  On this years taxes (2019) at the bottom of the section where we entered the 1095 info; it seems to have a link to our K1's.  In reviewing past years returns, I don't seem to see this.  Is this correct/something new for 2019; or have I somewhere entered something incorrectly?

It is not a new thing.  Since you self-employed, you are also permitted to deduct your portion of the health insurance premiums (total premium minus the premium tax credit you are permitted) as a business expense.  If the following applies to your previous year's taxes, you should review them and ensure you received the deduction.  If you didn't, you can amend your returns.  The question to link to your self-employment income has been there for years, so double-check your returns.  You may have taken the deduction or you have not qualified to take the deduction.

If you reported self-employment income on any of the schedules listed below AND you used that income to buy health insurance through Healthcare.gov or your state Marketplace, you can deduct your premiums on your taxes. However, you need to tie that income to your 1095-A so we can properly calculate the deduction amount.

  • Schedule C - Self-employed business income
  • Schedule F - Farm income
  • Schedule K-1 partnership - This only counts if you earned self-employment income from that partnership, which means you would have an entry on Line 14 of your K-1 from that partnership.
  • Schedule K-1 S corporation - This only counts if you have a W-2 from the S corporation and are an owner with more than 2% interest in the S corporation.

Did the corporation pay for the insurance (either directly or by reimbursing you)?  If it did, that amount was required to be added to Box 1 of your W-2.  Was that done?

If yes, check that box AND when in the K-1 section check the box about medical insurance and answer all of the followup questions (but DON'T enter the cost of insurance in the K-1 section).

If the corporation did not pay for the insurance (and therefore did not add it to Box 1 of your W-2), DON'T check the self-employed box in the 1095-A section.  You don't qualify for it.

Hi, I have a question regarding this matter. If S-Corp already paid the cost of insurance what is the reason we have to link 1095-A to k-1 to deduct this premium while S-Corp already paid?

Because the corporation added it to Box 1 of your W-2.  Then you can link the health insurance so it becomes a deduction on your personal tax return (on Schedule 1).
