In 2021 I replaced the roof on my home and had a swimming pool built. Under the sales tax section would these 2 items be eligible for tax credit? The list on Turbo Tax lists, vehicles, RV and has a category for building materials. What parts of the costs of these projects - if any - might I be able to include in my Federal Tax Return?
Thank you
Jeff

Yes. Per the IRS:
3. A home (including a mobile home or prefabricated home) or substantial addition to or major renovation of a home, but only if the tax rate was the same as the general sales tax rate and any of the following applies.
a. Your state or locality imposes a general sales tax directly on the sale of a home or on the cost of a substantial addition or major renovation.
b. You purchased the materials to build a home or substantial addition or to perform a major renovation and paid the sales tax directly.
Thank you for the reply. What amount is deductible? Total cost of the job? Cost of only the building materials?
Is there a cap for the deductible amount? These are large expense items.
You would only be able to claim the portion of the expense that had a sales tax imposed on it (the materials), not the total cost of the job.
The sales tax deduction is a part of the SALT tax section of your return. SALT is state and local taxes. For tax years 2018 through 2025, that section is limited to a maximum of $10,000. In addition to the sales tax, real estate tax and personal property tax are also in this category.
