How do I file my New York taxes when I have to mail in my Federal tax return? New York requires that I file electronically if I used Tax software to prepare my return. However my federal return was rejected because I listed my son, daughter in-law and grandsons as dependents (because I pay almost all of their expenses and they filed first). Turbo Tax will not submit my New York or New Jersey returns until my federal return is accepted. (I work in New Jersey and live in NY). What do I do? Is there a way to let the Turbo Tax software know when the mailed in federal form is accepted?

The instructions for Form IT-201 state (on pg. 4) : "You must e-file if your software allows you to e-file your return."
If you mailed in your federal return, you will not be able to e-file your NY return, so you can mail in your New York return with peace of mind.
