Filed as a dependent by mistake! (Stimulus Check?)

Well on August 6 my husband and I went to the Accountant and we filed a 1040X that same day, registered mail/return receipt.  I waited for 3 weeks and never received the green card back, so I checked the USPS tracking number on my receipt and it was delivered to the IRS on August 12, 2020.  On December 22, 2020 we finally received the green card from the USPS saying that the IRS has indeed received our 1040X.  It is January 22, 2021 and the IRS has yet to even look at my 1040X!!!!  I had to pay my Accountant $75.00 to get this done for me and my husband and now we sit and wonder if we will ever get any Stimulus that the President issues.  So upsetting that one stupid mistake has cost us so much money, but I guess nothing gained/nothing lost.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the Federal Review section,  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

I mailed mine too in April 2020. I filed mine myself, so I only had to pay $4 to send it to them. But I got no reply at all. After some money he I guess in October, I saw that we could file 1040x electronically, I did using turbo tax and it was accepted. Then I checked the status of my Mail, it said they’re not processing paper mails, so I guess that’s why mine wasn’t checked at that time. Even as my 1040x has been accepted, I still haven’t received my first or second stimulus check. I read it on the irs site yesterday that you can file for a rebate refund (if you didn’t receive the full check amount or if you didn’t receive anything at all, if you’re eligible? on your 1040 2020, or 1040sr. So I’ll do that while I file my taxes this year.

I have all of my documentation to file my taxes, but should I?  Should I just wait to see if President Biden sends more stimulus money out?  Just wanting some opinions on this?

Don't be in a rush to file.  Even if Turbo Tax lets you submit your return they will just hold all the returns until the IRS opens filing on Feb 12.  So there is no hurry.  And a lot of people who file early find out they have to amend later like when they get their actual W2 and 1099 forms.  Or they get more forms than they were expecting.

Regardless of anything else, you should always file your taxes in a timely manner.  If you are sure that you have all of your information, you certainly can file your taxes.  This should not have any affect on future stimulus payment.

You can prepare and complete your returns using TurboTax. However, they will not be processed until February 12th.
