Energy Tax Credit

Hello,

In 2023, I replaced two existing windows and 2 outdoor patio doors with two Energy Star - Anderson A series sliding doors (each sliding door replacing an existing window and an existing door). Can I request credit for two windows and two outdoor doors (total of $1,100) or I can only request credit for two outdoor patio doors (total of $500)?

Thank you!

The credit for the doors and windows is separate.  So you would enter the total amount you paid for the 2 windows in the window box and the amount you paid for each door in 2 separate boxes.  One box will say most expensive exterior door and the other box will say all other doors.  But, the total credit for the doors will be $500 ($250 per door maximum of 2 doors) assuming each door cost about $834 or more per door. The maximum amount for all windows combined for windows is $600.

The Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit is a non-refundable credit

  • Worth up to 30% of costs with a maximum credit $2,000 for
    • Air source heat pumps
    • Heat Pump Water Heaters
    • Biomass Stoves or Boilers
  • Worth up to 30% of qualifying costs for a maximum combined total of $1,200 for the following:
    • Doors, Windows and Skylights
    • Insulation
    • Natural Gas, Oil Propane Water Heaters
    • Furnaces
    • Boilers
    • Central Air Conditioners ($600 maximum Credit)
    • Electrical Panel Upgrades
    • Home Energy Audit (up to $150)
  • You can combine the $2,000 credit with the $1,200 credit for a total of $3,200
  • This credit is a use it or lose it credit.  If you do have enough tax liability in the year you buy and install the item, you will not be able to carry the credit forward.
  • NOT available for new construction.

Thank you for your response!
I should probably clarify that I only bought 2 sliding doors.
The sliding doors that I purchased replaced two existing windows and 2 existing doors. This sliding doors are very big (covering walls that had prior windows and doors).
my question is — can I split the cost for the two sliding doors between doors and windows to maximize my credit given I replaced old windows and doors? Or, regardless of what I replaced I can only get credit for two sliding doors?

Regardless of what you replaced, you can only get the credit for the 2 sliding doors you purchased. You cannot take a credit for the windows since you did not make a separate window purchase.  So your credit will be limited to $500 for the 2 doors.

When Anderson Windows installed my SLIDING PATIO DOOR and CASEMENT BEDROOM WINDOW, I was not given the materials cost. I was simply charged $13,137.00 FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT. But if I do not have the cost of the products installed, what can I deduct on my taxes?

If the total amount was for parts and labor, use the entire amount. If the program asks for a separate account for parts and labor, then use your best estimate for allocating between parts and labor.
