Do I need to report qualified expenses for year I'm not qualified for HDHP?

This year I have a PPO.  Last year I had an HDHP.  For this year, do I need to report qualified expenses for my HSA on my 8889 form if I have no HSA contributions or qualification for a HDHP?

For example, I don't contribute anything to HSA this year.  I visit the doctor and pay $25 for my visit using my HSA debit card this year.

In this example, I don't think I need to report my $25 since it's a qualified expense and I have no HSA contributions to report.  Or did I miss where I need to put it?

Even though you no longer have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and don't qualify to make contributions to your Health Savings Account (HSA), you still may have an HSA with money in it, that you are able to use for your current medical expenses.

  • If you took the $25 from your HSA, you'll get form 1099-SA from your HSA administrator.
  • You'll have to enter the 1099-SA form in TurboTax. To enter the 1099-SA form, see the TurboTax FAQ: Where do I enter my 1099-SA?

If you didn't take the $25 from your HSA, you may not have to enter it. See Can I Claim Medical Expenses on My Taxes?

Since you used your HSA to pay qualified medical expenses, your tax return is require to include Form 8889 to show that the HSA distribution is nontaxable, which TurboTax automatically prepares when you enter the Form 1099-SA that you'll receive near the end of January reporting the distribution.
