Claiming your dependent on form W-4 will only ensure that your tax withheld is calculated correctly.
But it is not necessary to claim your dependent on form W-4 to receive the Child Tax credit, which will be determined by what you enter on your tax return at tax time.
If you do not claim your dependent on form W-4, your withholdings will be higher and you will receive a higher refund at tax time.
What you claim, on your W-4, is only an estimate for tax withholding purposes. What you claim on your W-4 does NOT lock you in (or out) of what you can claim when you actually file you tax return.
