My grandson who is a college student is claimed by his parents as a dependent. We indicated he is claimed by someone else and that he does not provide 50% of his own support. Is he eligible for the Standard Deduction? Turbo Tax Deluxe is giving him the Standard Deduction. I need to make sure I do not inadvertently do something that negatively impacts his parent's tax filing.

The Standard Deduction for an individual for whom an exemption can be claimed on another person's tax return is limited to the greater of:
…..$1,100 or
…..Your earned income for the year + $350 (but not more than 12,400)
So you would get a minimum of $1,100.

That explains it. The standard deduction is based on his W-2 wages which were more than $12,400. Thank you
