Dependent and stimulus question

I claimed the $500 Credit for Other Dependents for my 18 year old daughter. She was told that in order for her to receive the stimulus payments she will need to file her taxes. Is this correct? Will my claiming her as a dependent effect her receiving stimulus payments?

Side note:  I received $1700 for my first stimulus. But nothing for payment 2 or 3.

Dependent and stimulus question

Dependents are not eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit, even if they file their own income tax return.

You are not eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit if any of the following applies:

  • You may be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s 2020 return (for example, a child or student who may be claimed on a parent’s return or a dependent parent who may be claimed on an adult child’s return).
  • You do not have a Social Security number that is valid for employment issued before the due date of your 2020 tax return (including extensions). Some exceptions apply for those who file married filing jointly where only one spouse must have a valid Social Security number to claim RRC.
  • You are a nonresident alien.

Your daughter will not receive her third stimulus. You will. There is no age limit for a third stimulus dependent so it will be sent to you.

It sounds as if you received the correct stimulus amount for EIP1 and EIP 2. Dependents under age 17 at the end of 2020 were eligible for the $500 and $600 payments, so you would not have received a payment for your daughter if she was 18.

Dependent and stimulus question

So because my daughter was 18, I should not have received anything for her? But she did not  receive anything either.  I received the add'l 500 on the first payment, total of $1700. But I received nothing for the 2nd and neither did she.

Dependent and stimulus question

The $500 payment may have been a mistake. If your daughter was 18 for any part of 2020 then she would not be eligible for the first and second payments.

A qualifying child for the first and second payments are a child who meets the following conditions:

  • Relationship to the individual who’s eligible for the payment: The child is your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, grandchild, niece, or nephew).
  • Child's age: The child was under age 17 on December 31, 2019.
  • Dependent of the individual who's eligible for the payment: The child was claimed as your dependent on your 2019 tax return or in the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool.
  • Child's citizenship: The child’s a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.
  • Child's residency: The child lived with you for more than half of 2019.
  • Support for child: The child didn’t provide over half of their own support for 2019.
  • Child's tax return: The child doesn’t file a joint return for the year (or files it only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid).

The TurboTax Recovery Rebate Questions will calculate your correct payment based on the information you provide for your 2020 tax return.

  • Type stimulus in Search in the upper right
  • Click jump to stimulus
  • Say NO to It looks like you qualified for the stimulus, did you get any payments?
  • Enter the actual payment amounts you received.
