According to Turbotax, it looks like I'm getting a fairly large credit for rent in DC - but this doesn't seem right. I've never gotten renter's credit in DC before, and this amount seems too high. I answered all of the prompts truthfully - I have rented in DC for the entirety of 2021, and the amount of rent I entered was my monthly rent x 12. But I also looked at Form H for DC, and I don't make less than $20K - so I shouldn't be eligible, right? I also don't know if the actual landlord pays taxes on the building - it's run by a management company, so I'd have to ask the company for details. Can someone clarify, please?

You must meet the following requirements to claim the DC Rent Tax Credit:
• You were a District of Columbia (DC) resident from Jan 1. through Dec. 31, 2021; • Your residence is not part of a public housing dwelling;
• You rented or owned and lived in your home, apartment, rooming house, or condominium in DC during all of 2021;
• Your 2021 federal adjusted gross income (AGI), was $5,700 or less ($75,900 or less if you are age 70 or older);
• You did not rent from a landlord whose property was either exempt from real property taxes or who paid a percentage of rental income to DC instead of paying a real estate tax;
• You must not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s federal, state, or DC income tax return unless you reached age 65 on or before December 31, 2021.
My landlord lives in Turkey. Turbo Tax doesn't like the TU which is international abreviation for Turkey. What do I do.
If your landlord is exempt from property tax, or if the amount of property tax they pay is based on a percent of the rent they receive, you do not qualify for the Schedule H Rent Credit.
If you are not able to obtain this information from your landlord and you file the Schedule H, then OTR will determine the tax status of your landlord using their name and contact information you have provided on your tax form and if OTR determines that the property taxes are not exempt, you will not be eligible for the Schedule H credit.
If the credit (refund) is issued and OTR later determines the property taxes are exempt, you will have to pay back the credit.
Can you contact your landlord? They may need to provide a US mailing address in order for you to claim the credit.
You might contact the DC Office of Tax and Revenue with any additional questions.
