Yep here we are in 2025 trying to do our 2024 taxes and stupid issues like this go unaddressed by Intuit. I spent hours on this problem thinking I was a moron for not being able to get Turbotax software to do what it should to properly document the foreign tax credit as the IRS requires. I have foreign taxes from individual stocks as well as RICs and completely understand how it should be done, but Turbotax s/w is unable to handle the simple task of segregating the taxes from each foreign country and the RICs. Multiple people are suggesting convoluted workarounds which have the potential of introducing additional errors. Yes, I guess I will just submit using "Various" for all foreign taxes to keep it simple, but Intuit should be flogged for not resolving this issue after many years of complaints. Ridiculous!
Yes! This is the method I’ve used for years. It was actually suggested by the IRS when I discussed by phone. If each country were listed separately, it would add about 50 pages to the return!
I hear ya. I originally posted that problem years ago and TT simply ignored correcting the problem. In 2024 I paid foreign taxes to Mexico and Denmark. When I went to the screens TT actually accepted both countries so I'm thinking, hmmm maybe it is fixed. I entered Mexico and then Denmark. I first clicked on Mexico and the next screen I entered the tax paid for Mexico. Then I'm thinking I can go back and now enter taxes for Denmark. NOPE. The TT screen stated if I go back all tax entries will be eliminated. And if I didn't go back, the next screen did NOT give me the option of adding taxes to the Denmark entry. .... Out of frustration once again I simply applied ALL Mexico and Denmark taxes paid to Mexico, and I just moved on to the next category. It is so odd why they don't fix that simple bug.
I appear to have fixed it by manually editing the associated worksheet. Tax refund increased substantially. I added "various" to the RIC that was already there. The step-by-step mode would not let me add both. Adding a 2nd (RIC or various) negated the former, repeat to infinity.
Yup...same here. though I would strong recommend that you change it to "Various" rather than list it incorrectly all under Mexico. Still, it is so stupid how they handle it and clear out previous entries. I'm CERTAIN that this would be relatively simple for them to fix and correctly allow you to just RETAIN the entry for each country as you enter it. Also, I could sort of hack into it and enter the TOTAL under Various, then go to the explicit raw form and enter the broken out amounts raw into the form, but then when I got done with all of that, the stupid turbo tax said "checking for errors" and cleared all the things I had manually entered into the raw forms. I was CURSING...this alone has *almost* made me STOP using Turbo Tax all together....
Keep in mind, that MANUALLY adding into the form may not perform the proper LIMITS to foreign tax credits computation OR ALT MIN testing, since Turbo Tax now does NOT have all the information correctly. I would make sure you do it under RIC or VARIOUS first as a TOTAL, as if you *are* seeing significant tax changes computationally, something is quite wrong.
OK, thx. Will do.
Yeah, be careful if you do "overrides" as other forms could be affected. I can't imagine the IRS ever flagging it, just as long as the total is correct. When you think about it, it probably doesn't matter what countries you list, just as long as you list the total amount you paid. You'll get the same credit regardless whether you list one country, ten countries (which TT doesn't allow) or "various". They key here is just get the total tax amount correct.
No change, still got the refund bump. Set RIC = to the earlier RIC + various total and nuked various to zero. No tax due impact.
